Overview
PDF JustFit offers two compression modes. Smart mode reduces file size while preserving the parts of the document that make a PDF useful: real, selectable text, embedded fonts and the underlying page structure.
What Smart compression keeps
- Text stays selectable, so it can be copied, searched and highlighted.
- Fonts and document structure are preserved.
- The result still behaves like a normal text PDF in other apps.
When to choose Smart compression
Smart compression is the right default for contracts, invoices, reports, papers and forms — any document that someone will need to read, quote or copy from.
Because text remains selectable, Smart-compressed documents are also the better starting point if you plan to OCR, index or ask questions about the document afterwards.
Smart vs Maximum
Smart keeps text selectable; Maximum rasterises pages for the smallest possible file. Smart is a balance between quality and size; Maximum prioritises size above all else.
If you need to reach a very small target size, Maximum can go further. If you need the document to remain a working text PDF, choose Smart.

Frequently asked questions
What is Smart compression in PDF JustFit?
Smart compression reduces the size of a PDF while keeping text, fonts and document structure fully selectable. It is one of two compression modes offered by PDF JustFit.
Will Smart compression make my text unselectable?
No. Smart mode is specifically designed to keep text selectable. If you choose Maximum mode instead, pages are rasterised and text is no longer selectable.
